چکیده

• Since the report of Deming and Lnetscher that patients with congestive heart failure excrete abnormally large amounts of a saltretaining substance in the urine, considerable attention has been focused on the role of aldosterone in congestive heart failure. Although there is a large body of evidence to demonstrate that excessive aldosterone secrelioji plays an important role in the marked Xa retention in congestive heart failure, some investigators have failed to find increased secretion of this mineralocorticoid in clinical"' 4 and in experimental"' heart failure. The mechanisms leading to excessive aldosteroue production in cardiac failure and the mechanisms by which aldosterone secretion is decreased as cardiac compensation is achieved have been the subject of much recent investigation.9 Although cardiac glycosides have been reported to reduce adrenal blood flow and aldosterone secretion in normal dogs, the possibility must be strongly considered that improved cardiovascular function leads to the decrease in aldosterone production after digitalization in heart failure.'

Increased aldosterone secretion in dogs with right-sided congestive heart failure and in dogs with thoracic inferior vena cava constriction.

Studies (1-5) of patients with congestive heart failure, decompensated hepatic cirrhosis and nephrosis have provided evidence of increased amounts of aldosterone or aldosterone-like substances in urine during edema or ascites formation. More recently, it has been demonstrated (6) that increased urinary excretion of aldosterone occurs in association with sodium retention in dogs with right heart...

Adrenocortical and Renal Hormonal Function

IN 1950, Deming and Luetscher1 reported that urine from patients with congestive heart failure showed an increase in sodiumretaining activity. This finding was the first suggestive evidence that a high blood level of aldosterone is present in heart failure and this result raised the question of the pathogenic importance of aldosterone in cardiac failure. In the present series of experiments, th...

Increased aldosterone secretion following acute constriction of the inferior vena cava.

Aldosterone secretion (1) and aldosterone excretion in urine (2) are markedly elevated in dogs with chronic right heart failure and in dogs with chronic ascites secondary to thoracic caval constriction. It was suggested that the adrenal cortex is stimulated to secrete aldosterone by factors resulting from a high venous pressure and the consequent loss of fluid and electrolytes from the blood st...

Renal origin of an aldosterone-stimulating hormone in dogs with thoracic caval constriction and in sodium-depleted dogs.

Recent studies (1-5) indicate that the immediate stimulus to aldosterone production is humoral. Evidence for secretion of an aldosterone-stimulating hormone (ASH) by the kidney in response to acute blood loss was presented at the Laurentian Hormone Conference in 1960 (4). The present study is concerned with the locus of secretion of an ASH in two other experimental situations: 1) hyperaldostero...

Relation of renin and angiotensin II to the control of aldosterone secretion.

• At the Laurentian Hormone Conference in 1958, evidence was presented to show that the immediate stimulus to aldosterone production is humoral. Cross-circulation of blood from dogs with experimental secondary hyperaldosteronism through normal isolated adrenals produced an increase in aldosterone secretion by the isolated adrenals.' This finding suggests that a humoral agent in peripheral blood...
